encinoHIFU – Your Prostate Cancer Treatment Facility
The Urological Institute of Southern California was founded by a group of forward thinking urologists in the San Fernando Valley in 1989. It initially was located in Sherman Oaks, California and moved to its current location in 1996 at 5400 Balboa Blvd., Suite 111 in Encino, CA at the corner of the 101 Freeway and Balboa Blvd.
The initial services offered by this facility related to the then new technology of using electrically generated shockwaves to destroy kidney, ureter and bladder stones, all within an elegant outpatient setting which was soon to acquire Joint Commission accreditation as a surgical center, one of the first in the San Fernando Valley. Additional services have been added over the ensuing 27 years including a number of non-urological technologies which had their premier at this facility. The facility currently has over 100 physicians and surgeons on its operating staff and has maintained a standard of excellence which has generated a national reputation in several specialties including a center of excellence in urological surgery.
With this background, the facility has embarked on two new essentially noninvasive techniques for treating prostate conditions. The first is called UroLift which is a technique for nonsurgically correcting bladder-neck obstruction by enlarged benign prostate tissue (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). This technique involves no radiation, no surgery and no significant postoperative complications.
More dramatic yet is the introduction of the recently FDA approved (Oct 2015) HIFU technology allowing for the ultra-precise ultrasonic destruction of cancer tissue within the prostate with minimal discomfort, no surgical incision, no exposure to radiation and dramatically reduced incidence of incontinence and impotence from an average of 50% of men with various of the older procedures to around 1% with this exciting new technology.
The facility itself performs between 300 and 400 cases monthly and is the ideal location for the introduction of such an important technology as all of the moving parts which assure excellent patient outcomes have been honed to an extreme professionalism – – the surgeon skills, highly trained and experienced urology specialized nursing and technical staff, Joint Commission accredited facilities with a caring and kind personality.
In 1989, the original urological group was formed under the name of Southern California Stone Center to bring electric shockwave lithotripsy and subsequently lasertripsy to the San Fernando Valley. This group numbers in any given year of this 29 year history between 37 and 55 urologists on its staff. In addition, in the year 2002 the facility was expanded to include a number of additional specialties including Gastroenterology, Gynecology, Hand and Foot Surgery and Pain Management Services that became known as the Encino Plaza Surgical Center. This facility is one of the most experienced freestanding surgical centers in the San Fernando Valley or in Southern California altogether.
Since the very beginning, this facility was founded on the principle that physicians working together could provide a level of service at a very fair cost to their patients by eliminating much of the bureaucracy that often haunts medical facilities in the US and around the world. This facility has always been 100% physician owned since its beginning and has always been a participating facility with the major insurance carriers and Medicare. It has never been owned by a corporate entity whose main goal at times may appear to be to return profits for their shareholders.
